… well, I tried to empty my fridge and cupboard to start over next week on a ten euro base. Now, three invitations occured, and all are personal invitations to a family-member birthday. Ok – I forgot that while shifting to the next week… but anyway, I don’t care anymore. I will start on Monday, and we’ll see.

While talking to a good friend, he came up with the idea of giving my literal education a new kick. Why not stick to books, and read a book each day, each with a minimum of 300 pages. So here’s a first design of the rules:
- Read (at least) one book per day.
- Each book must have a minimum of 300 pages.
- Books may be poetry or specialist literature.
- To validate, I will post a summary of each book at the end of the day.
I would be happy to hear good suggestions, preferably in German. Otherwise, I will pick some books myself. This week will start on March 23rd.

Unfortunately, or luckily, or whatever, today’s start had to be rescheduled to next monday, due to tons of good food still remaining uneaten in my fridge. I don’t have the heart to throw things away just to stick to the idea. So I will use this week to do next week’s shopping, and share my experiences in search for the cheapest products available around Bochum.

Yesterday, I visited a local discount supermarket to check current prices and pre-calculate my idea. Looks like it will be a week with few variety, but well – better than being hungry.
Some facts: A 1kg-couscous package contains 5-6 meals at a lowest rate of 2 euros, plus some vegetables. Organic carrots are at 0,89 euros per kilo. The cheapest way to eat bread is to bake it yourself. Two 3/4 kilo breads come out of a prepared mixture at 0,79 euros.
A problem will be some additional things you normally have and use… I’m thinking of things like butter, oil, spices. I think salt is available at quite low rates, or at least I can “get” some at the cafeteria at University.
Oil might be a bigger problem – but maybe I don’t even need it for the week. A low-fat option is a nice side-effect though…

So, I finally chose the style for week one. It’s a thing related to my eating behavior, and these are the details:
- There’s a limit of ten euros for food for the week
- No food, spice or drink already in stock is allowed
- I won’t search for invitations, but they occur from time to time. I don’t have one yet, but if one might happen, I’ll take the chance.*
- As usual, week starts on Monday and ends on Saturday
The reason for this
Poverty is a problem not only of the poor countries. Even among us many people have financial problems and sometimes – either due to wrong behavior, personal misfortune or whatever – not enough money to get a healthy meal. I will try to figure out, how it is to keep an eye to the money and work with a minimum limit for my personal food. Further, I will try to use the money as senseful as possible. We’ll see…
